The CSA Centre’s  ‘scale and nature’ research programme was built following a review of evidence on the scale and nature of child sexual abuse which consists of four strands.

Medical examinations – CSA Centre – When CSA is suspected or disclosed, a paediatric medical examination should be considered. These examinations are holistic assessments of the child’s wellbeing and broad health needs, as well as an opportunity to look for supportive findings, such as injury or gather forensic samples.

Preventing Child Sexual Abuse & Keeping Children Safe | NSPCC


ISVAs can support children and families through the criminal justice process, answer questions about the medical care and sexual health and they can give emotional support with referral on to counselling services if needed.

There are Young Peoples ISVAs, based at the Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Portsmouth (telephone  0300 123 6616). They see children aged 13 to 18 from across Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth, and Southampton.

Children’s ISVAs  are able to advise  children and their carers for children of all ages. They are provided in different areas by specialist organisations such as Yellow Doors, PARCs. Where to get direct help and advice Services for professionals:

HSB forum is HIPS wide and is facilitated by Hampshire Youth Offending Team and Forensic CAMHS – email HSB.consult@hants.gov.uk for the link to attend.

The forum allows practitioners to:

  • Discuss cases of concern or raising professional query.
  • Agreement of actions for intervention which may form part of plans to address or manage need and risks identified.
  • Explore academic or theoretical developments in relation HSB, with a view to increasing awareness, knowledge and skills in the management of cases involving HSB.
  • Development of professional networking amongst the children’s workforce in relation to HSB cases.
  • Increased awareness of services available and how they might work together to manage needs and risks.

The things I wish my parents had known

The things I wish my parents had known draws together advice from 16-21-year-olds on how parents should manage tricky conversations around sexual harassment and access to inappropriate content, including pornography. No child should have to stumble across harmful content online, and my office is taking action to try and tackle this issue. But, in the meantime I wanted to provide support and guidance for parents now on how to support your child if they do come across harmful content online.

Specialist support for sexual abuse


Sexual health services

Solent Sexual Health Services accept self-referrals for young people aged 13 and over, across Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth, and Southampton, for sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing, pregnancy testing and contraceptive services. Younger children can be referred by paediatricians and will receive a specialist service. https://www.letstalkaboutit.nhs.uk/ or phone 0300 300 2016. The R.O.S.E clinic provides a non-judgemental sexual health service for people at risk of sexual exploitation regardless of age – they take referrals from professionals only.


Sexual Trauma & Abuse Restorative Therapies (START)

START – is a new sexual trauma service, operating across Central, West and North Hampshire, bringing together the previous RASAC (Rape and Sexual Abuse Counselling Service) supporting Central, West and North Hampshire and BRASACC (Basingstoke Rape and Sexual Abuse Crisis Centre), also operating in the North of the county. The core service offered by START is a confidential, specialist counselling and support service for anyone who has experienced sexual abuse and/or sexual assault, resulting in sexual trauma. They also offer Peer Support Groups in locations across the county and therapeutic residential week-ends.

Yellow Door

Yellow Door – offer a wide range of specialist therapeutic, support & prevention services to anyone at risk from or affected by domestic abuse, sexual violence/abuse or other forms of interpersonal harm. They offer services, including Independent Sexual Violence Advisers, throughout most of Hampshire, Portsmouth and Southampton. The therapeutic support offered will vary on where a child lives.

CIS’ters

CIS’ters – was set up in September 1995 by Gillian, a female survivor of childhood sexual abuse by a member of her immediate family. Their mission is to raise awareness of the existence of sexual abuse during childhood and to highlight the needs of those directly and indirectly affected. The also includes information to help the wider community of victim/survivors, friends and non-abusing family, plus professionals.
