Workforce Development

Hampshire Safeguarding Children Partnership (HSCP) and its associated partners provide presentations and training opportunities on its toolkits to equip professionals with the knowledge, information and skills to apply the resources effectively. Where appropriate, details of external training that practitioners might find helpful are also provided.

To support professional understanding and implementation of our toolkits, the HSCP provides free multi-agency training for professionals and volunteers working with children and families in the Hampshire local authority area. Harmful Practices multi-agency training

Multi-agency training on breast ironing/flattening, ‘honour’ based abuse, female genital mutilation and child abuse linked to faith and belief is available to professionals working with children and families across the Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton local authority areas.

Breast Ironing or Flattening

Noodle Now – This breast ironing course provides essential information on the definition of breast ironing, where it is practised and the consequences. (Requires purchase)

Female Genital Mutilation

The Virtual College has a range of eLearning courses, online resources and training solutions. Training related to FGM includes:

Petals – Developed by Coventry University, Petals is the UK’s first FGM web app, which gives advice on how to get support and deal with FGM. It can also be used by people who want to find out more about FGM and how it might affect them and others.

Forward – This provides an FGM Training Programme which is an accredited and tailored developed training programme for professionals on FGM, and FGM awareness sessions for schools, as well as teacher training on FGM and how to respond to it appropriately.

Developing Excellence in Response to FGM and Other Harmful Practices – The National FGM Centre offers half/full day CPD advanced accredited training for all professionals, including community organisations. As well as educating professionals on what FGM is, the training focuses on how to talk to families, what a referral to social care must include, how to apply for FGM Protection Orders, how to assess risk, how to do direct work with children and families, how to undertake community engagement and the law. It has also, with Olive Branch Arts, developed “Bloodlines which is an interactive theatre training aimed at all professionals working with girls who could be at risk of, or have undergone, FGM.

Online Training in FGM Awareness – The Home Office provides free online training on FGM awareness.

Female Genital Mutilation programme (eLearning) – Provided by Health Education England, the Female Genital Mutilation programme is made up of five 20-to-30-minute eLearning sessions which are designed to improve the knowledge and awareness amongst health professionals of some of the issues which FGM has on women and children.

‘Honour’ Based Abuse

Workshops for Frontline Professionals – Karma Nirvana deliver workshops for frontline professionals, to teach professionals about ‘honour’ based abuse, so they can respond to victims and save lives.
